Fairlinch Camping in Braunton, North Devon – highly recommended

fairlinch-tariffs071If you’re thinking of taking advantage of this great Summer heatwave and taking a trip to the beautiful beaches of North Devon then I’d highly recommend Braunton’s Fairlinch Camping. It’s on the edge of the village of Braunton with all its shops, pubs and restaurants and more importantly just a few minutes from the stunning beaches of Saunton Sands and Croyde. Above all it’s run by local farmer Richard Dyer who is as friendly, honest and straightforward a person as you’re ever likely to meet. It really is the real deal for authentic Summer camping in the West Country. Better still prices are just £9 per night for adults and £3 per night for under 12s with a special family deal of £20 per night for 2 adults and 2 children. There is still availability and if you’d like to book then call 07969 080873. Feel free to say that you read about the campsite here. You can also visit their website here.

Was Tarka the Otter author Henry Williamson a belly boarder?

Having today visited Henry Williamson’s writing hut above Georgeham which is currently for sale with Webbers I was delighted to see an old belly board propped against the wall. Was he an early belly boarder in the area? Time for Pete Robinson of the Museum of British Surfing to investigate further perhaps? You can see the belly board on the third of the photographs here.

The First Wave exhibition at The Museum of British Surfing – new from April 5th 2014

TFW OverviewThe Museum of British Surfing re-opens after its annual winter refit on Saturday April 5th 2014, with its third major new exhibition ‘The First Wave – surfers & their stories‘.

This exciting new display has touch-screen units so that you can find out about British surfing history from those who were there, including interviews with people who were surfing here almost 100 years ago! A new eight minute film about UK surf heritage has been produced and will be showing on a loop on a special screen.

You’ll be able to see action & hear stories from famous British surfers like big wave experts Andrew Cotton & Gabe Davies, plus the late Viscount Ted Deerhurst who became the UK’s first professional surfer back in 1978.

Surfboards and other items have been selected that help to tell the story of surfing in the UK, and for the first time we are adding QR codes to many items on display so that you can find out even more information on your smartphone.

We are celebrating opening for our third year with a revamped price structure for visitors giving even better value for money. From April 2014 when you buy a full price adult or concession ticket you can get in free for the rest of the year! Plus children aged 16 and under now go free (when accompanied by an adult), which means it will be cheaper for families to come & enjoy our surf culture and heritage displays.

There are new children’s activities for 2014, and we’ll reveal more about the fun ‘pop-up’ challenge with Ollypop very soon! There’s the ever popular spotter’s trail, and the chance to play pinball on an original 1970s surfing themed pinball machine!

‘The First Wave’ exhibition runs from April 5th to December 31st 2014 at the Museum of British Surfing, Caen Street car park, Braunton, North Devon EX33 1AA – see the information section on our website for opening times, admission charges and directions.

The Big Spring Beach Clean

BSBC-Web-page-banner

Join the Big Spring Beach Clean this weekend and help tackle the marine litter crisis.

In the wake of the winter storms our beaches have been impacted by marine litter on an unprecedented scale. Tide lines are covered in a thick, multi-coloured layer of marine litter as far as the eye can see. Cotton bud sticks, shipping crates, carrier bags, water bottles, fishing netting, cigarette butts, mermaid’s tears – the vast majority of it plastics.

In response to these devastating beach scenes Surfers Against Sewage is calling on coastal communities to help tackle this crisis as part of the Big Spring Beach Clean.

Everyone is welcome at these fantastic events.

Saturday 29th March:

Crow Point: 10.30am – 12.30am

Croyde (Downend Car Park): 10am-Midday

Sunday 30th March:

Saunton Sands: 10am

Volunteer now before the problem becomes bigger than we are…

Braunton’s very own Andrew Cotton rides huge wave in Portugal and tames Jeremy Paxman on Newsnight!

Braunton’s very own Andrew Cotton has gone global in the last few days after surfing a huge wave in Nazare in Portugal. You can see the clip below. As well as masses of press coverage, he was also interviewed by Jeremy Paxman on Newsnight which you can see here. Having been the person who towed Garrett McNamara into the world’s biggest wave in the past, it seems fitting that Andrew’s well-deserved time has now come.

Simon Anderson, inventor of three-fin Thruster, visits Tiki in Braunton!

20130916-162513.jpgGreat to meet Australian shaper and surfer Simon Anderson in Braunton on Saturday. Simon is well-known for having invented the three-fin Thruster which revolutionised the sport of surfing as we know it. He was here visiting the Tiki Surf Shop and is pictured in the shop with his new board along with Tiki’s founders Tim Heyland and Dave Aldrich-Smith. He followed this the next day by a visit to Braunton’s Museum of British Surfing.
