Sun 28th June 2pm – 5.30pm: British Red Cross Open Garden at Buckland Manor and St Brannocks House

RedCrossOpen Gardens offers a rare opportunity to explore the secrets of hidden and private gardens not usually open to the public. On Sunday June 28th 2013, 2 p.m. to 5.30 p.m., Buckland Manor and St Brannocks House, St Brannocks Hill, Braunton, Devon, EX33 1HN will open in aid of the British Red Cross by kind permission of Mr and Mrs John and Henry Bury and Col. and Mrs Jeremy Smith-Bingham. This is a rare opportunity to view two private gardens which only open to the public every one or two years.  As part of the Open Garden, the restored Round House of Buckland Farm can also be viewed. This was the hub of the farm in the 18th/19th century where the barley would be threshed.

Start at Buckland Manor and walk around the rose garden, a rockery, and a wonderful Victorian walled kitchen garden. Then via a long wooded drive you reach St Brannocks House, built in 1805, to admire the flower and walled vegetable garden and the highlight of the tour, a magnificent Victorian greenhouse with the most interesting variety of tender plants and some rare tropical flowers from around the globe.

Two gardens for the price of one: The entry fee is £4 per adult and children under 12 are free. Refreshments, cream teas and cakes will be served. All the money raised from the open gardens contributes to the invaluable work that the Red Cross carries out in the UK and abroad.

Directions: By foot or by car follow the A361 through Braunton towards Ilfracombe. At the crossroads by the Braunton Fire Station turn left up St Brannocks Hill towards Georgeham. By car turn right after 400 yards through the pillars signed Buckland Barton. By foot turn right by the Catholic Church. It is a 20 minute walk from the centre of Braunton.

Limited wheel chair access. Suitable outdoor shoes are advised. Dogs welcome.

You can see pictures which were posted up for the last open garden day two years ago below.

The Big Spring Beach Clean

BSBC-Web-page-banner

Join the Big Spring Beach Clean this weekend and help tackle the marine litter crisis.

In the wake of the winter storms our beaches have been impacted by marine litter on an unprecedented scale. Tide lines are covered in a thick, multi-coloured layer of marine litter as far as the eye can see. Cotton bud sticks, shipping crates, carrier bags, water bottles, fishing netting, cigarette butts, mermaid’s tears – the vast majority of it plastics.

Help us to bring back baby clothes to the Braunton RSPCA shop!

20131109-144556.jpg

Update (11/11/13): The North Devon Office have now confirmed that baby clothes are to return!

We’re a big fan of the Braunton RSPCA shop and also of the wonderful people that work there. In particular, it has until very recently, been a great place to get baby clothes. But sadly, that seems to be no more. The shop has been reorganised and the baby section has completely disappeared. What’s more, there only appear to be a very limited number of clothes for small children at all. When we asked the lady in the shop she seemed equally disappointed since I’m sure she realises how much traffic comes from thrifty parents in the village. She encouraged us to call the North Devon RSPCA office so that they might re-consider their decision. Their details are here. If you agree, perhaps you might also consider giving them a polite call…

Support Ben Bradshaw as he walks the Braunton Parish boundary

ben2

Ben Bradshaw (left) is the new curate of the Braunton Mission Community and in July he will be doing a sponsored walk of the parish bounds of Braunton. These stretch out over 25 miles and include walking through fields and beaches. To the north it goes past Knowle, to the East as far as Fullabrook and Pippacott, to the South it stretches to the end of Braunton Burrows and to the West, past the village of Saunton. He is hoping to raise £1,000 by doing the walk to raise funds for St Brannock’s Church which has recently had to find funding to complete urgent roof repairs costing over £7000, at a time when the Church is already suffering serious financial difficulties.

On the walk he will not be taking any money, food or a tent with him. He will sleep under the stars during the night of his walk and will rely on kind-hearted strangers I meet on the way to provide any food donations. He says on his funmdraising page, “I decided on this unusual step to be in solidarity with, and also to experience first hand, the challenges that many people around the world face on a daily basis, not knowing where their next meal will come from or where they will sleep at night. I have visited Zimbabwe on three separate occasions and I do charity work with refugees, lepers and orphans in the African country who often live under such circumstances.”

To sponsor him visit his JustGiving page and for more information you can email him on brother_ben@btinternet.com.
